LaGuardia Airport Terminal B

LaGuardia's old Terminal B was a byword for outdated American air travel. HOK's replacement opened in phases starting with 11 gates in December 2018, running through a new headhouse in mid-2020 and a second connecting bridge in early 2022. The finished terminal, with its 55-foot ceilings and daylit concourses, tracks the 2016 renderings.

What changed

  • The wider LaGuardia redevelopment was announced in July 2015. Terminal B was one major component of that airport-wide program, not the entirety of the unified complex shown in every early rendering.
  • Construction started in spring 2016. The first phase of 11 gates opened December 1, 2018, followed by 5 more gates on June 2, 2019.
  • The new headhouse, with its 55-foot ceiling, food concessions, and indoor play area, opened June 13, 2020.
  • The last new gates and the overall new Terminal B were completed in January 2022, after phased openings that began in 2018; the old terminal structures were subsequently removed.
  • The finished terminal's headhouse form, concourse layout, and daylighting follow the massing and materials shown in the 2016 renderings.

Why there is nothing to explain

The built Terminal B follows the HOK program and massing shown for that component of the redevelopment. Delivery occurred through distinct phased openings from 2018 through overall completion in January 2022 while the airport remained in operation.
