What changed

  • Foster and Partners won the design competition for Lusail Stadium in 2015, beating David Chipperfield Architects, Mossessian and Partners, and Mangera Yvars Architects.
  • Renderings released December 18, 2018 showed an 80,000-seat stadium with a gold, faceted exterior described by the firm as drawing on the form of bowls and vessels from Arab and Islamic decorative art.
  • Construction broke ground April 11, 2017. Completion was announced in November 2021, later than the originally targeted 2020 date.
  • The first major public match and formal opening event was the Lusail Super Cup on September 9, 2022, before the stadium hosted ten 2022 FIFA World Cup matches, including the final.
  • The 2018 renderings used an approximately 80,000-seat tournament figure. The Qatar Football Association currently lists 88,966 seats, and the planned post-tournament reduction to 40,000 had not occurred by late 2025.

Why there is nothing to explain

The built stadium matches the design Foster and Partners released in 2018. The completion date slipped from an originally targeted 2020 to late 2021, but no sourced evidence indicates the architectural design itself changed.
