West Side Stadium (New York City 2012 Olympic Bid)

Above the Long Island Rail Road West Side Yard, between 11th and 12th Avenues, West 30th to West 33rd Streets, Manhattan, NY approximate location

The proposed stadium would have anchored both the Olympic bid and the rezoned Far West Side. The Public Authorities Control Board required unanimous approval; on June 6, 2005, two members declined to support the funding package, so the proposal did not advance.

What changed

  • The approximately $2.2 billion proposal called for a retractable-roof stadium and convention facility over the LIRR West Side rail yards for Olympic events and New York Jets games.
  • The Metropolitan Transportation Authority board voted March 31, 2005 to accept the Jets' bid for the rail-yard site.
  • The Public Authorities Control Board required unanimous approval of the funding package. On June 6, 2005, two of its three members declined to support it, preventing approval.
  • The failed approval weakened New York's Olympic bid; the IOC awarded the 2012 Games to London the following month.
  • The city redirected rezoning and infrastructure planning, including the No. 7 subway extension, into the Hudson Yards development.
  • No stadium was built on the site.

Why it changed

The project did not receive the unanimous Public Authorities Control Board approval required for its funding package on June 6, 2005. Contemporary reporting attributed objections to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno and documented opposition from Cablevision; those positions are attributed rather than presented as a single settled motive.
