SkyRise Miami

401 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33132 (Bayside Marketplace site)

SkyRise was proposed as a 1,000-foot observation and entertainment tower on Biscayne Bay. Miami voters approved it in 2014, but groundbreaking and site work did not lead to vertical construction. The developer says the project was abandoned in 2020, with the decision announced publicly in June 2021.

What changed

  • Proposed by developer Jeff Berkowitz starting around 2010 to 2012, designed by Arquitectonica, as a roughly 1,000 foot observation and entertainment tower on the Bayside Marketplace waterfront, renamed SkyRise Miami in August 2013.
  • The design included observation decks, restaurants, a nightclub, and a controlled free-fall drop ride descending at up to 95 miles per hour.
  • Miami voters approved the project in a 2014 referendum, and the City Commission approved it the same year.
  • Plaza Construction was announced as general contractor and construction was expected to begin in 2019.
  • Developer Jeff Berkowitz later said the project was abandoned in 2020 when securing financing appeared futile; the cancellation was announced publicly on June 28, 2021.
  • Nothing of the tower was built. The site remains part of the Bayside Marketplace waterfront.

Why it changed

The project did not secure financing for vertical construction. The roughly $430 million figure was a late-stage reported estimate, and earlier estimates varied. Developer Jeff Berkowitz said the project was abandoned in 2020; the cancellation became public in June 2021.
