SoFi Stadium

1001 Stadium Dr, Inglewood, CA 90301

SoFi Stadium's translucent canopy and Infinity Screen closely followed HKS's design. The multi-use NFL bowl required a separate reconfiguration for FIFA dimensions; by August 2026 that work had been completed for the World Cup rather than remaining future work.

What changed

  • Groundbreaking took place November 17, 2016 with an original planned opening in 2019; heavy rainfall in 2017 pushed the opening to September 8, 2020.
  • The stadium's million-square-foot canopy of 302 ETFE panels and the suspended Infinity Screen were delivered as designed.
  • The frequently cited approximately $5.5 billion figure may encompass the broader stadium and entertainment development and financing, so it is not presented here as a reconciled stadium-only construction cost.
  • A June 2020 construction incident resulted in a worker's death; the sources reviewed do not support attributing a cause beyond official findings.
  • For the 2026 World Cup, the stadium completed a reconfiguration that raised and widened the playing surface and removed or reconfigured lower-bowl seating to meet FIFA dimensions.

Why it changed

The multi-use NFL bowl required reconfiguration for FIFA tournament dimensions. The completed work included more than turf replacement: the playing surface was raised and widened and lower-bowl seating was removed or reconfigured. This is described as a venue conversion, not as evidence that the original design failed.
